Join the free Healthy Communities Walking Program and Get Up! Get Walking! Get Healthy!

The participants of the Walking Program are walking their way to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.  The program is designed to give  rewards as participants make a virtual trek to the Bridge and beyond.

Those who sign on, keep track of their own progress in the Walking Program’s Personal Walking Journal and Log, and meet with the Community Point Person at least 3 times and attend a group walk if  able to do so.  When the program is completed , an individual will have walked almost far enough to reach Sault Ste. Marie.

The Healthy Communities Walking Program is designed to motivate and support people who want to get moving toward better health.

By getting one to walk at least three times per week, the  goal is to reduce the likelihood that of developing a preventable chronic disease.

It helps fulfill personal goals  to feel better about one’s health and to have more energy.

Every day 7,000 people under the age of 16 have their first drink of alcohol.  Combat early drinking by:

• Be at home when your teen has a party
• Make sure that alcohol is not brought into your home or property by your teen’s friends.
• Talk to other parents about not providing alcohol at other events your child will be attending.
• Create alcohol-free opportunities and activities in your home so teen feel welcome.
• Report underage drinking to local law enforcement.

The Manchester Voices Coalition offers materials and resources in paper or electronic format to help parents and teens.  Yard sign and posters are also available warning Parents Who Host Lose the Most.

Local  Tax Assistance

The CRC will offer opportunities for individuals to receive free tax assistance on two occasions: February 26 & March 20.  Certified IRS Volunteers will be available on an appointment basis for this service. In addition, this service may help eligible people take advantage of the Earned Income Tax Credit.  Anyone who earned $48,279 or less from wages, self-employment or farming in 2009 should check to see if they qualify.  A return of up to $5600 is possible for those who qualify.  This event is an effort by the Washtenaw Asset Building Coalition and Washtenaw Co. ETCS & Michigan Works!

Helpful Tips for Job Seekers

Are you or is someone you know looking for work?  On Tuesday evening, September 22nd, job seekers in Manchester and its surrounding townships are invited to meet with individuals experienced in human and career resources.  Topics will include identifying your “job fit,” job searching strategies, elements of a successful resume, and more.  The event is offered at no cost to participants and will start at 7:00 p.m. sharp in the Board Room of the Ackerson Building.  The Manchester Community Resource Center and MI Works! will host this evening devoted to helping  residents find employment during these challenging times.  Call 734-428-7722 for more information.  Pre-registration is encouraged to assure sufficient numbers of handouts.
