Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a way for people to become members of a farm by making an up-front financial commitment to it. In exchange, members receive a share box, typically once a week, of seasonal, fresh produce, or in some cases meat and eggs. A CSA season typically runs from late Spring through early Fall.

Eating Seasonally

An important part of buying local is making an effort to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables when they are in season in our area. Today’s global marketplace allows us to buy foods grown virtually anywhere in the world all year round, but those options are not sustainable.

By purchasing local foods in season, we eliminate the environmental damage caused by shipping foods thousands of miles, our food dollars go directly to the farmer, and our families are able to enjoy the health benefits of eating fresh, unprocessed fruits and vegetables. Buying seasonal produce also provides an exciting opportunity to try new foods and to experiment with seasonal recipes. And it simply tastes better!

Preserving Our Natural Areas

Local organization:

The Stewardship Network is a grassroots cooperative organization working to protect, restore, and manage Michigan’s natural lands and waters. It helps individuals, organizations, and businesses manage specific sites through sharing ideas, resources, and information. Check this organization out at http://www.stewardshipnetwork.org/.

Preservation tips:

Volunteering is a great way to help the environment!

A great way to learn about the environment and preservation is to participate in stewardship activities in our area. Stewardship is helping to care for the land and becoming a partner in protecting land, water, and the quality of life of our natural areas.

Here are some websites to help you find local stewardship activities.

http://www.1-800-volunteer.org/ Select ‘Environment’ for your keyword, enter your zip code and fill in your requirement for distance.

http://www.stewardshipnetworkonline.org/ Click on ‘Find an Event’ and then fill in your interests in the search form to view available events.

http://www.idealist.org/ Click on the ‘Find’ tab, and then ‘Volunteer Opportunities’ and fill in the search fields. A place to start may be to use the ‘Area of Focus’ field and selecting ‘Environment and Ecology’ or ‘Wildlife and Animal Welfare’.

http://www.volunteermatch.org/ Enter your ZIP code, city or state and keywords describing the opportunity you’re looking for.

And don’t forget to remove and dispose of barbed-wire fencing on your land. It is dangerous to humans, pets and wildlife.
